IPOA committee member Maurice Deverell appeared on Newstalk and LMFM this week to discuss a petition calling for an end to lease agreements banning pets.
He highlighted the prohibition on landlords accepting extra deposit for pets as a determining factor. This prevents landlords from offsetting extra risk of property damage with a larger deposit. Consequently, landlords accepting a tenant with pets becomes an article of blind faith.
Many landlords are more than happy to accept tenants with pets but cannot afford the risk of uncompensated property damage. The legislation prevents landlords and tenants from coming to a mutually beneficial agreement, creating an artificial and unnecessary wedge between both parties.
