IPOA committee member Maurice Deverell appeared on Newstalk with Pat Kenny and Drivetime with Sarah McInerney this morning to discuss the latest quarterly rental report from Daft. The report showed widespread increase in rent amounts, which are themselves an outcome of rent controls.
The discussion covered the arbitrary nature of the HICP rent cap, the “golden handcuff” effect confining tenants to low rent accommodation, and the punishment of landlords who set reasonable rents prior to the introduction of rent pressure zones.
Maurice also put the Irish rental market in the broader European context to highlight flaws in the current system, suggesting a system wherein landlords could bring rent to market rate between tenancies would be fairer to both landlords and tenants.
Recordings of Maurice’s appearances can be found on the Members’ Resources page along with the report itself and all recent IPOA media appearances.
